Edie Sedgwick - 1960s Fashion Icon

Andy Warhol and Edie SedgwickImage via Wikipedia

Style Icon - Edie Sedgwick by Zara Eck

The world has seen many fashion icons throughout time changing trends of shoe and clothing styles....

Audrey Hepburn with her long black gloves and cigarette holder, Marilyn Monroe with that all so famous white flared dress, Princess Diana with her countless flawless outfits and of course Sarah Jessica Parker with her chic high heel shoes. But no fashion icon has made some a massive impact on their era as Edie Sedgwick. Edie ripped up the rule book and created a new, fascinating style of her own which completely turned the 1960's upside down.

Her dynamically different sense of style came from spending her early year's studying art in Cambridge which followed to her moving to New York and becoming Andy Warhol's muse and one of the most famous "Factory Girls". Her style was unlike anyone else's before her. She was known for her large sweeping earrings, pointed high heel shoes, leopard prints, black tights, dramatic eye make-up and her pixie short bleach blonde hair.

Edie was a 1960's socialite and had every girl of her time wanting to look just like her as soon her fame arose. Her 15 minutes of fame were without doubt a well spent 15 minutes that reset the rules of fashion. Fashion today is still a reflection of what Edie Sedgwick introduced to the world of those years ago.

Pointed high heel shoes are still an essential for every girl. Edie was the first to promote the shoe in an iconic and trendy way, just like shoulder sweeping earrings (also known as statement earrings). These great fashion accessories have recently done a major come back on the catwalk and now on the high street and it seems that every girl is running out buying the biggest pair of statement earrings they can find which again, Miss Sedgwick herself initially brought to the world of fashion.

To get Edie's sensational 60's style there are a few DO's and DON'Ts.

DO -

  • Wear BIG statement earrings - the bigger the better. Edie used to have earrings that would sit on her shoulders

  • Pull out Leopard print garments - if you can't pull off leopard print clothes then use leopard print accessories, like bags, belts or shoes

  • Keep hair short and blonde

  • Wear high heel pointed shoes

  • Invest in a baker boys hat

  • Buy a big pair of shades to wear on your head whilst wearing your baker boys hat

  • Look in vintage/second shops - you can find some amazing buys (clothes and shoes) in vintage shops and may even be able to find some original 60's garments

  • Experiment with material and textures of clothing and shoes

  • Where dark eye make-up

  • Add your own style to Edie's - Edie was a fashion icon but modernise the look by adding a twist of your own style to it
DON'T -
  • Bleach your hair yourself - everyone can spot a DIY job so ensure you go to the hairdressers

  • Mix animal prints

  • Wear flat shoes - any head turning outfit is always finished off with a pair of high heel shoes

  • Over do the black eyes - Edie may have got away with it but very few people can

  • Wear real furs - you can find realistic looking fake furs for a fraction of the price and lets face it, who wants to be wearing an animal over them?

Earth day symbolEarth Day Symbol - Image via Wikipedia

We love our mama... Mother Earth that is. So, we felt it appropriate to send out a newsletter in honor of her and in celebration of Earth Day - hopefully it won't get lost among all the other dirt-digging, earth-loving, eco-conscious companies and organizations you love and promote. But, well, we want to do everything we can to spread the love.

Treat the Earth well. It was not given to you by your parents. It was loaned to you by your children (Kenyan proverb).

In honor of this year's Earth Day, we are offering 25% off of all the items in our organic CircleTees line (this week only), just use the code REVOLUTION when you check out. Here are a few earth-loving lines and ideas we are promoting at Soul Flower:

Organic Circle Tees

Buying organic cotton and other natural fiber clothing is a small thing you can do to help our environment. Circle Tees display eco-friendly messages on super soft tees and hoodies for the whole family. We use organic cotton and other eco-friendly fibers for this line of clothing - we also use earth-friendly (water-based) inks and nonreactive dyes on many of our t-shirts. Our recycled belt bracelets are made by reusing old belts (hand-picked and made by our bud Kimberly). And our latest collection of necklaces and bracelets are made entirely from recycled seeds. Eco-Friendly Jewelry.

Our body products are made with simple, raw ingredients. We work with Mama's Herbal Soaps and Prairieland Herbs, both of whom promote green living by creating products in small batches and using only organic and other natural ingredients. Maggie and Shauna have worked closely with us to create our own special scents, Soul Flower exclusives such as Patchouli Soul and Patchouli Flower.... Love Your Body.

THINK Green

We continue to try to green up our work environment and day-to-day practices. Most of what we do is simple stuff, like reusing boxes and printing on recycled paper - but the key to everything we do is to just be mindful of our mother earth always. It isn't about celebrating the earth just one day a year - we think about things we can do to lessen our footprint every day. We love hearing about customers that do the same and have other green-i-fying ideas. So keep the ideas coming.

Peace,

Your Buds (Mike, Peggy, Chad, Jennifer, Joe & Becky), Soul Flower

Psychedelic Art in Fashion

The Psychedelic Zombie T-ShirtImage by feelmystic via Flickr

Psychedelic Art in Fashion by David Arakea

Have you ever wondered why people wear tie-die t-shirts or what type of personalities they are trying to express?

This type of art has been popular since the 1960's. There are many ways to express this art, some are through pictures. This is also popular through the t-shirts we wear today. Psychedelic t-shirt art can take on many shapes and forms, such as splotches running in circles, or lines running in different directions, most are applied to brightly colored shirts.

Not only is psychedelic art used on t-shirts to express fashion, but is also used on pants, pictures and different type of art such as murals, album covers, and also posters. Most psychedelic art is 2 or 3 dimensional and most designs are unique in style, which a lot of people crave because uniqueness is part of the fashion today.

This type of art lets each individual be unique in one way or the other, which makes this type of art a very popular way to express the individuals' personality. Some people look back on the 1960's where this type of art began and they still in some way or other look at that era as being one of the best of the 20th century.

Even over time, this type of art from still makes a statement of the way some things never change, and never will (see an example of a psychedelic t-shirt).

Even so everyone today is unique and different in some way and this type of art is felt to be the one way people can express through fashion that everyone can be different in their own different way.

Through time this type of art has survived many years of different styles that have changed the clothes people wear and the different trends people have gone through.

David Arakea is the lead designer of a custom t-shirt online shop. Among others, he designed Black Keys t-shirt with a touch of psychedelic art.

Peace Sign Fashion - Fashion of a 1960s Icon

Peace SignImage by edgeplot via Flickr

Peace Sign Fashion by Julie W Hall

Hey, is that a flower in your hair?

RETAIL SHOPPING - 2009: Peace Signs are a big hit. They are blooming everywhere.

It's Spring - 2009 - and the question is heard - so what's hot? Not that we have lots of plastic and cash to splurge about with. Let's face it, we've all felt a pull on our wallets. In one way or another, we've all cut back a bit. So then, how may we have a bit of fun? Enjoy the shopping - even if our budgets have been scaled way back?

Take a look at the current fashion trends. Peace sign jewelry is HOT!!! It's sizzling HOT! From models and stars wearing it while being interviewed on television, to shoppers in your local mall, peace signs are back in a big way.

How about a tie-die shirt, era 1970's? You do recall the Volkswagen Beetles with the hand painted daisies, peace signs and GROOVY words all about. Well throw back or not, it makes us feel better. And let's face, who amongst us doesn't wish to feel a little better?

Peace signs, from their original humble beginnings in the early sixties to stop nuclear proliferation, to a few years later and the Woodstock days when people gathered to express their heartfelt desire for peace and harmony throughout our world - peace signs in any shape and size represented a better place desired.

Today, they are found on clothes and posters, furniture, bedding, fashionable jewelry and car emblems. Proudly displayed to show a deep-rooted desire that we want things to be better. That we must all seek to come together, work together and make this desired peace a reality.

And let's also acknowledge those who pursue this message, also note the extremely limited resources of our wonderful planet, our home. Al Gore (Vice President, Statesmen, educator and Nobel Prize Laureate), helped us to understand we must change. He simply labeled his insight - an inconvenient truth - an understatement for how necessary it is that we change our ways. We live on a planet with finite resources; and must stop its abuse.

So as many take up the notion of seeking a heartfelt desire for protecting the earth, so too, do we seek a better world - a world blessed with peace. It's time we take responsibility for the world we live in, and make changes. We all desire a cleaner world, and a peaceful co-existence. Just imagine no longer needing to remove your shoes before boarding a plane; or passing through metal detectors and official scrutiny. It may take several generations, but we need to start now.

The peace sign found around our necks, on our wrists, t-shirts, cars and elsewhere, are more than fashion - they represent a better tomorrow. They signify hope. So take a stand. Go ahead and don a fashionable peace sign necklace, and wear the funny circle with a few lines. Embrace it's promise and give way to making a difference this Spring 2009. Contribute positively to a higher conscience of man - and let us all seek a better way of living together - a world that embraces peace and gives it a chance.

These are hard economic times for most of us, but together we can and we will, get through this. Indeed over the past fifty years, our world and its global community has become much smaller; much more closely connected.

Many years ago, a uniquely talented, insightful and gifted individual sought to get our attention. So today, in this new Spring of 2009, let us take John Lennon's words to heart. Let us all "GIVE PEACE A CHANCE".

Retro Clothing is Turning Mainstream

Retro Clothing is Turning Mainstream by Paul Mcindoe

Taken literally, retro means replicating a style of the past. In a world where most look forward, the fashion industry has taken a look back to days gone by to help produce the latest trends. In addition to vintage clothing, retro has become an essential part of the wardrobe; and not just for the trend setters. Boys and girls, kids and parents are all enjoying the latest fashion trends with clothing influenced by cool and iconic designs from the 1960s to the 1980s.

For example, once upon a time superhero based t-shirts would only have been spotted on students; however, retro t-shirts are now an extremely popular item of clothing seen up and down the high streets. Nowadays people of all ages are more than happy to parade their favourite superhero, cartoon or rock band from yesteryear on their t-shirts.

Of course, that feeling of nostalgia crossed with cool has made retro clothing dating from the 60s right up to the 80s a huge success.

Therefore, it won't be a surprise to learn that most high street fashion stores have taken advantage of this demand. But it's not just high street outlets leading the way, many specialist online retailers have been set-up to grasp a market share of the increasingly popular 80s retro trend. As such, the online market has helped to spread the trend globally, and it is now possible to purchase retro t-shirts from all over the world, most of which will have no nostalgia attached but will still appear in-trend.

Another reason for its popularity on the high street is its price. Manufacturers are able to keep costs low, as the main requirement is your average t-shirt with a printed design - the trick is to find the right design. For the consumer, the cost of a retro t-shirt in comparison to a designer t-shirt is minimal, and with an added cool factor. And even if you can't quite find the right design, it might be possible to request that your own design is printed to produce a personalised retro t-shirt.

Being so competitively priced - with thousands of designs to choose from - it's no wonder that retro clothing and retro t-shirts in particular have become such a huge success.

And with plenty of accessories to choose from as well, it is now possible to find the right retro design that makes you look good and feel cool.

Eco Fashion - Throwback or New Trend?

LONDON - FEBRUARY 29: (L-R) Actress Sienna Mil...Image by Getty Images via Daylife

Eco Fashion - The Latest Trend by Ceri Heathcote

Lately fashions and trends change so quickly. Some people change their whole wardrobe each season to keep up with the latest high fashion look. High street shops have reacted to this by selling low cost clothing that can be bought and thrown away after just a few wears. But what impact does this consumerism have on the environment and how can we minimise this impact whilst still looking stylish?

Pesticides and cotton - Cotton is particularly prone to insect attack and so vast amounts of pesticides are used by farmers to ensure a good crop. As the insects become more tolerant to the pesticides, the farmer are forced to use more pesticides. When combined with other damaging methods of cultivation used when growing cotton, there is a significant amount of environmental damage caused including the contamination of drinking water and health risks to growers, barren and infertile soil and destruction of flora and fauna. Organic cotton is grown without the use of pesticides and with minimal environmental impact. There are also a range of other organic materials available including soy, hemp and bamboo.

Waste and landfill - The environment, food and rural affairs committee has stated that almost 30% of the waste at some UK landfill sites comprises of clothing. Much clothing is made of synthetic materials which will not break down and even the natural fabrics will produce gases such as methane contributing to global warming. Chemicals in fabrics that have been thrown away can also be washed out, contaminating water supplies. You can reduce the amount of clothing that is put into landfill by recycling, swapping and selling your old clothing and buying clothes that will last.

Textile Manufacture - Textile manufacture can be very damaging to the environment with both energy used and gas and chemical emissions produced. The manufacture of both natural and synthetic fabrics uses a variety of chemicals that can be very damaging to the local environment. You can reduce the impact of clothing manufacture on the environment by again buying clothes that will last and recycling, swapping and selling your old clothes. It is also possible to buy clothing made from old clothing and recycled materials.

Clothing distribution - There is even an environmental cost of the transportation of clothing from the place of manufacture to the UK. Most clothing is made in countries a long way from the UK and transportation will use valuable resources and fossil fuels as well as creating damaging emissions. It is possible to buy clothing that is made from hemp, grown in the UK, although at the moment there is not a huge amount of choice. The best way to minimise the environmental cost of the distribution of clothing is to buy less 'fast' fashion and instead find ways to make clothes last longer. The impact of distribution is also reduced by buying or swapping second hand clothes in the UK instead of buying new.

There are many ways that you can reduce the impact of your clothing on the environment whilst still looking stylish. It is important to remember that you do not have to have the latest fashion to look good and often those that swap or buy second hand clothes create their own much sought after eclectic style.

This article was written by Ceri Heathcote for posh-swaps.com, a website for swapping, buying and selling second hand and vintage clothing.

Clothes swapping and buying and selling secondhand clothes is a great way to reduce the impact of fashion on the environment and to save money.

Jeans - Constant Revisiting of Styles

LAS VEGAS - AUGUST 26: Singer/songwriter Sher...Image by Getty Images via Daylife

Jeans - Dedicated Followers of Fashion by Paul Mcindoe

A world famous UK clothing designer once said that fashion is a gentle progression of revisited ideas - and it's difficult to argue with this sentiment.

Whilst fashion by its very definition is something that is constantly changing, there are only so many changes clothing trends can go through before they inevitably start to borrow ideas from previous styles; and this can be seen across many fashion crazes in recent years.

The flare and bellbottom fashion of the late 1960s and 1970s was resurrected for a time in the late 80s to early 90s baggy music scene that emerged from Manchester; however, this time the style was a little more casual. Furthermore, the mod style trend of the mid 1960s has certainly seen a resurgence in recent years, with skinny proving very popular once again.

Of course, fashion has always been closely linked with celebrity life - the glitz and glamour of the music and film industry helping to turn the stars into role models and ultimately, global trendsetters. As such, it only requires a quick scan of the latest music magazines to see what's currently hot with young people across the country.

Whilst some styles can change in a relatively short period of time, some things simply never seem to go out of fashion. Jeans, for example, is one item of clothing that seems to have been around forever. Originating from the French phrase 'bleu de genes' (the blue of Genoa), denim jeans originated in two places independently of each other; in Nimes (France) and in India, where denim trousers were worn by sailors of Dhunga (which eventually lent its name to dungarees).

But whilst they were originally worn by workers for their hard-wearing material and general durability, jeans became fashionable in American popular culture in the 1950s, and became a symbol of rebellion across various youth subcultures of the time. And the rest, as the saying goes, is history.

Jeans have been a fashion mainstay in many cultures since then, being worn casually by people of almost all demographics. As is the case with all fashion trends, people have always sought ways to distinguish themselves from the mainstream.

Over the years, popular denim fashions have included bellbottom, boot-cut, flare, straight-legged and hipsters, to name but a few. The hip-hop music scene also helped to bring baggy jeans into the mainstream, often worn alongside a baseball cap, trainers and a casual jersey. This helps to demonstrate how one simple item of clothing can reveal quite a lot about the background and lifestyle a person chooses to follow.

For now though, skinny jeans are back in a big way. If they ever go out of fashion again, perhaps it's best holding on to them, because you never know; they might be all the rage again a lot sooner than expected.
