Fairtrade Clothing Explained

WFTO Fair Trade Organization MarkImage via WikipediaBy John H Cooper

Even if you don't purchase it by now everyone has heard of fair-trade products. Many people have been informed or told to purchase fair-trade chocolate, wine, coffee and many more types of food but have you thought about fair-trade clothing?

I must admit until recently I hadn't heard of fair-trade clothing so I've written the following article to inform you of this and why it's so important. Don't forget that although fair-trade products are often more expensive you're helping to build the welfare and generate money flow in less privileged countries so people can create a better life for themselves.

Although this type of clothing is mainly found in the U.S., it's worth looking into which shops within the United Kingdom will supply this type of clothing.

This is a system put in place like with cocoa bean farmers to ensure that the woman and children who make the clothing for our countries in others will be treated fairly. The aim is to ensure these people will be treated as fairly as they would if they worked in England or any other wealthy country. With fair-trade workers it's mandatory that they are given minimum wage so that they can feed their families. Along with this it is forbidden that children work like it would be in the UK. Also like in our home country the working conditions are monitored on a regular basis so that any changes can be made if there is any hazard or danger to the workers or the surrounding environment.

Along with looking after the workers the materials used in the clothing is closely monitored. Only environment friendly products and materials will be used in the making of the clothing so there is as little damage as possible on the environment.

I hope this has helped to inform you.

John Cooper would advise you to purchase from Brown Bag Clothing

Reviving 70's Winter Glamour With The Moon Boot

DSC02992Image by acme via FlickrBy Charlotte J Wilson

When one thinks of Italy they think of picturesque countryside, ancient ruins, incredible history, scrumptious food, style and elegance. They do not often think about the very practical and functional original Moon Boot. In actual fact, Tecnica first designed Moon Boots in the early seventies and the fact that they still remain in production today is testament to the valued niche they have in the market.

Moon Boots are a winter essential. What exactly are they? Moon Boots are a water resistant or water proof form of footwear that are made from lightweight materials with a specialised thermal lining that can keep the feet and calf warm in temperatures reaching -35oC. The heel and sole of the boot enhance comfort and stability while the sole adds extra warmth due to its own insulating property. These features make them ideal in snow and cold weather conditions. Their appearance reflects an oversize, fancy and snug gumboot.

In the 40 years since they emerged on the market, the choice of options available with respect to Moon Boot features has grown immensely. They now come in a range of outer coverings including suede, nylon jacquard, soft touch nylon, nylon, varnish PU, quilted PU and glitter fabric. Each variety changes the outward look slightly from a matte through to a glossy finish. Personal preference is the only way to make a decision with regard to this feature as they are all exceptional in quality and look.

As expected, coming in a range of materials means that there is extensive flexibility with respect to colour choice. Throughout their history the Moon Boot has always been a bright and happy addition to any winter wardrobe and now is no different. Colour examples include neutral and subtle tones such as ochre, grey, dark brown, black and ice through to light pink, violet, azure, petrol blue, orange and sea green. More conspicuous colours consist of silver, ivory, burgundy, bouganville, apricot, red and yellow especially since some also come in a metallic finish.

Traditionally the Moon Boot came in a longer length in a style that was non-tapered. While this style is still the more popular one, a shorter version and/or a more fitted one also exist. Once again the decision as to which one is better is a matter of personal choice. Of course not all retailers may have all material range, colours or styles available.

Moon Boots are convenient in that they cater for both genders and all ages. Adults, adolescents and teenagers can look warm and trendy while newborns and kids can look cosy and cute. They are extremely versatile in this regard.

Moon Boots are more than just a piece of footwear to be thrown in a closet. Their insulating properties and ability to give stability in conditions with less traction makes them perfect for the dreaded winter months. They also bring a little bit of colour to situations that sometimes can leave one feeling dreary and melancholy. They look great, feel great and make you feel the same.

Charlotte Wilson has been writing for retailers within the fashion industry, such as online shoes retailer Sarenza UK, for over 10 years. To view a range of winter shoes and boots, including the full Moon Boot collection, visit the Sarenza website.

Environmentally Friendly El Naturalista Shoes

El Naturalista Boots (Purple)Image by cabbit via FlickrBy Charlotte J Wilson

As shoe companies progress through the new millennium, it is evident that there are those, which are really mindful of current affair issues that are prevalent in society. The destruction and misuse of the environment and the unlawful use of child labor are two concerns among others that El Naturalista Shoe Company are at the forefront of addressing. This means that not only can you purchase excellent footwear from their range but also with peace of mind that you are having minimal impact on the natural world and its people.

Their collection is aimed at both men and women with distinct styles for both genders. Although there are also unisex shoes which are neither masculine nor feminine. Within the women's range there are sandals, pumps, trainers, mules, boots, lace ups and high heels. Hence lightweight and more open styles are ideal for the warmer months while the more covered over shoes are more suited to the cooler times of the year. Within the men's line there is just as much variety. Trainers, sports shoes, lace ups, hi tops and boots ensure that the men are also catered for with respect to each season and all types of occasions.

So how exactly does El Naturalista Footwear tie in with environmental protection while respecting people from less privileged backgrounds? To put it simply, they follow the 10 points stated in their code of conduct. In summary, they follow the conventions set out by the Human Rights and Labor Organisation without discriminating against people based on race, sex, religion, age, nationality, political opinion, sexual orientation or disability. They also respect the rules and regulations set out by each country they work in, especially the minimum age at which one can work.

All the products that are used in the manufacture of their shoes where applicable cause the least amount of destruction to the environment. Hence they use natural dyes and materials, recycled and biodegradable products within traditional construction methods. Examples of this include their vegetable and 15th and 16th century chrome free tanning methods, the use of recycled rubber in their outsoles, the use of quicker breaking down natural rubber, hand stitching, the incorporation of polyurethane cork made from recycled materials into their soles and creating some parts of the shoe from 100% cotton.

The comfort of El Naturalista footwear is not compromised. Technologies and features used within the shoe include breathable, antibacterial, antistatic and removable insoles, high quality suede and leathers, extremely supple and hardwearing rubber non-slip outsoles, anti-odour treatment, excellent shock absorption due to ergonomic rubber and specialised shaping and contouring design. The unique Frog Shock cushioning system and Stonetherapy insole ensures that your feet feel like they are walking on pillows while being gently massaged. The health benefits for all the features outlined above are numerous. It should be noted however that not every shoe has all the described features.

El Naturalista shoes are a new way to look at shoe production. You can now feel comfortable that not only will your feet be the beneficiary of some well earned relief, your mind will as well.

Charlotte Wilson has been writing for retailers within the fashion industry, such as UK shoe shop Sarenza UK, for over 10 years. To view a wide range of eco-friendly shoes, including the El Naturalista collection, visit the Sarenza website.

Boho Clothing - The Origin of the "Bohemian Style"

whistles boho beaded & fringed hankie dressImage by no-frills marilyn. via FlickrBy Justin L White

"Boho Clothing" is a style. It originates from the Indian gypsies of the 1300′s who were leaving India due to its difficulties at the time. This is why you often see Indian influenced patterns worked into the style. Because of the nomadic tendencies of the gypsies, the style spread throughout Europe and made it's way into the United States and, now, Hollywood. Its American roots stem more from the artists of Romania and France and have been the chosen or natural style of those who perhaps have had to purchase their clothing second hand.

The Beatniks of the 40′s and 50′s were artists and often hobo travelers. Their style was influenced by the Bohemian artists of Europe (Paris in particular). The European version is often stereotyped by a turtleneck and a beret. The style continued to flourish in the United States during the 60′s and 70′s as it was picked up by the Hippie movement. "Hippie" was a term which sprung from the "Hipsters" of the Beat movement. Hippies also tended to be artsy and free-thinking and were often nomadic as well.

Today, the look continues to be a hot trend in Hollywood which has influenced its staying power throughout the United States and around the world. Celebrities who are known for their Boho Chic fashions include: Stevie Nicks, Sienna Miller, Mischa Barton, Kate Moss, Nicole Richie, the Olsen Twins, Carrie Underwood, Hillary Duff, Kirsten Dunst, and Lindsay Lohan. There are also a host of male celebrities who sport the look, including Johnnie Depp, Lennie Kravitz, and Paul Newman. Check out the runway and it's all over the place! Boho Clothing is a style built to last!

Justin L White has worked in the Boho Clothing retail market for several years. He is also fascinated by the mark on history created by the Beatniks and Hippies. Currently, he has a store specializing in Boho clothing and gifts from around the world and is looking to market online.

A Guide to Gogo Boots

Cover of "Barbarella: Queen of the Galaxy...Cover of Barbarella: Queen of the GalaxyBy R William Harrison-Millan

Gogo boots have gained a slightly filthy reputation in recent years, due to their association with strippers and the sex industry, but this reputation is totally undeserved. They are an important part of any woman's wardrobe, and it is important to try and salvage their place in fashion history. An item that can be worn with, and enhance, just about any outfit. They are fantastic for enhancing the shape of the leg, and are a surprisingly revolutionary piece of footwear - far from the preserve of strippers and sex industry workers; they are a liberating and eternally fashionable item to slip your feet into.

The term actually derives from a French expression. À gogo, meaning 'in abundance' is derived from the ancient French term for happiness, la gogue. This entered the English lexicon in 1962 as a term meaning 'all the rage', thus giving Gogo boots their name. But why are they so revolutionary? Well, the whole concept of a mainstream boot for women as a fashion accessory was totally unheard of, as they were worn only to keep women's feet warm during winter and in rainy weather, and not as streetwear. They were designed specifically to compliment the fashions of the time, with short skirts like the miniskirt all the rage. They accentuated the shape of the leg on display, and also helped cover a bit of the leg - perfect for women who were a little unsure about flashing the flesh.

The designer André Courrèges is widely credited with creating the first ever Gogo boots. It was a low-heeled, calf-high boot created for his 1964 Autumn collection as part of the 'Moon Girl' look. These boots quickly became popular, and were soon mass-produced, and became a huge hit with girls dressed in the 'Dolly Bird' style in 1960s London. They were usually designed with a zipper up the back, or on the side, and were adopted by teenagers, which saw them worn by dancers on television shows, helping to further popularise them.

This popularity soon saw them become iconic. For example, the boots in Nancy Sinatra song 'These Boots are Made for Walking' are widely recognised to be Gogo boots. The boots became a part of pop culture when they were worn by Jane Fonda in the cult sci-fi film Barbarella. Such success saw other designers have a go at making their own version of the boots, with the height of the boot rising as the hemlines became higher and higher, culminating in Yves Saint Laurent's thigh high garter boots. These in turn gave rise to 'kinky boots', calf- or thigh-high boots with a pointed heel, and were worn by Diana Rigg and Honor Blackman in the classic TV series The Avengers.

Nowadays, the Gogo boot has become a huge part of fashion worldwide, so it is important to move away from stereotyping it as a slutty item of footwear. It is one of the most revolutionary items of fashion wear to emerge from the sixties, and a key part of any woman's wardrobe.

Fancy Dress Costumes From the Seventies

Mid 70s fashion in a Devon rural setting. Note...Image via WikipediaBy R William Harrison-Millan

As people get older, many of us end up looking back and cringing at dubious fashion choices. Many look back on the sixties and blush at the flared trousers and headbands they sported in the summer of love, just as many are horrified by their eighties getups, with the Flock of Seagulls haircuts or the big frilly shirts of the New Romantics.

However, the 1970s, a decade probably just as ridiculous for fashion as the '60s and '80s, seems to be regarded with a certain affection. The decade of ABBA, the Jacksons and Elton John has become a favoured source of inspiration for anyone dolling themselves up for a fancy dress party. Indeed, 1970s fancy dress parties are becoming a favoured past time of partygoers all over the country. With a range of costumes and accessories, such as GoGo boots, Afro wigs and Elton John-style glasses, there is a great range of wacky wear to choose from.

Believe it or not, 70s fancy dress parties started being popular in the 80s, so they have enjoyed an almost instantaneous popularity, and there is now a wealth of costume makers catering for 70s aficionados. This means it's both easy and fairly cheap to put together a knockout 70s outfit in a flash. Furthermore, it is easy enough to choose your costume, with many combination's of clothes to get the necessary 70s gear.

If you fancy having an outfit to keep, you could pair a miniskirt with a pair of GoGo boots and some oversized sunglasses, or a brightly coloured mini-dress with some ostentatious costume jewellery. Then again, if you are not the type who wants to overload your wardrobe with clothes you never plan on wearing again, you can hire a costume from a website or a costume shop. This can be a great opportunity to get a really ostentatious outfit. You could go for a jumpsuit paired with some GoGo boots and an Afro wig, perhaps with a large false mustache, or even some stick-on chest hair. It might be itchy, going to the bathroom might be a little bit of a struggle, but you'll really be getting into the 70s fancy dress party spirit.

So dressing up for a 70s fancy dress party is incredibly easy these days, especially as many of the fashions have returned to the high streets. Playsuits, similar to a jumpsuit with shorts rather than full trousers, are popular summer wear, while GoGo boots have enjoyed a renaissance, paired with jeans, skirts and even worn on men. Flamboyant male celebs such as Russell Brand and Noel Fielding have started pulling on the GoGo boots when they step out.

So while fashions are generally looked back on with regret, shame and derision, but 70s fashions have somehow survived through the popularity of 70s fancy dress parties. This popularity has even managed to sneak the outfits back into the public consciousness, with the clothing now a regular feature of the high street. ABBA may be gone, but their spirit clearly lives on in the nation's wardrobes.

Bob Marley T-Shirts Make a Dramatic Comeback

Bob MarleyImage via WikipediaBy Michael Vito U Gull

All across the nation, Bob Marley t-shirts are making a huge comeback into popular culture. The latest craze has high school students, college kids and recent graduates donning that timeless iconic face. But it doesn't stop there, as this trend also has the 30 and 40 year old crowd dusting off their old vintage Rastafarian, reggae, and Marley t-shirts which have become once again oh so popular.

It doesn't take much more than a trip down to your local community college to see just how strongly this movement is catching on. Its nearly impossible to stroll the entire way around campus without seeing at least a few Bob Marley t-shirts. High school students are at times being persecuted as well as singled out by school administration because of Marley's well known association with marijuana. However, these authority figures should take a deeper look at the message which those who support Marley are really attempting to convey.

The fact that Bob Marley apparel is on the upward rise, comes as no shock to anyone who is familiar with the man himself. People are supporting and paying tribute to more than merely a man or an artist. They are paying homage to the thoughts and ideas which Marley stood for. These values of peace, love, and harmony have spread and taken deep root in parts of our culture. And thanks to this icon, they continue to be spread through his music and his memory.

Are you a fan who has those Bob Marley t-shirts stuff away somewhere in the closet? If that is the case, you may want to consider digging it up and joining in as an entirely new generation takes up the values and ideals which he so kindly left for us to consider.

What Did Hippies Wear?

Russian Rainbow Gathering. Nezhitino, August 2005Image via WikipediaBy Sarah Yogini

What did hippies wear back in the 70's?

This is a very easy question to answer, hippie clothing consisted of your tie dye shirts and baja hoodies along with patchwork pants and head bands. They also had bell bottoms for pants. Now if you aren't sure what a baja hoodie is let me take some time to explain them and you will realize that you have seem them before and you might even have owned one at some time in your life.

The baja shirt is made of acrylic and polyester usually but they look like they are made of hemp. They are sometimes called drug rugs or hippie hoodies. They have that big pocket in the front and they have stripes that go up and down on them. The pocket will always have the stripes going the opposite way. They are coming back in style in 2010 and 2011.

If you haven't bought one yet, you need to get on the ball. If you are not sure what clothing to get your son or daughter for Christmas, you can't go wrong with a baja hoodie. They are very hard to find in any store so you will be better off just getting one online. Don't pay for shipping! Some sites look cheap and then charge you a ton for shipping, but there is a site that offers free shipping so you can save some money. These sweaters are very cool and the best part is that they don't cost a lot of money.

Buy more hippie clothes at Mexican Threads where they offer free shipping on all baja shirts.

Polka Dot Bikini - Popular 1960 Fashion Clothing

A woman wearing a bikiniImage via WikipediaBy Cleo D. Pless

It would not be wrong to say that the 1960s was the era when fashion was at its peak. New trends were coming into existence and the old trends were also being polished and transformed according to the standards of the new time. Some of the fashion styles which were launched during the 60's are still in vogue today. This article will point out these fashion trends which have withstood 50 years. As we all know, hippy culture came into being in the 1960's, bringing with it many trends such as headscarves and headbands. Headscarves are what we now call bandannas.

Mini skirts were very popular among the young girls of this period. These skirts were knee length or a little above the knees. New brands and designers were emerging and they were constantly trying to bring a change in every little or big fashion trend of the past. Experiments were done on many different fabrics to create miniskirts. Prints such as polka dot and stripes were immensely popular during this period; most miniskirts had these patterns and prints. Even today, such prints and patterns are in fashion.

Pleated skirts with pleats on both the back and the front of the skirts were popular among women and girls of all ages. Today, this trend is again emerging among young girls. As mentioned earlier, prints and patterns were given a lot of importance so apart from stripes and polka dots, floral prints were also trendy. However, polka dots were the most famous among all.

One of the most important and popular fashion trends of the 1960's includes bikinis. These bikinis were thought to be very bold by some people but they still became very popular and the favorite among women of those times. The trend of Polka Dot Bikinis was so famous during this time that many popular swimsuit designers and brands offered these.

The Benefits of Organic Clothing and Eco-Friendly Apparel

A tie dyed shirt. Photo taken my MpegMan.Image via WikipediaBy David Von Heelum

As many people are trying to get back to natural living, by eating foods that are grown organically (grown without the use of man-made chemicals), some suggest taking it a step further by wearing clothes that are made of only organic materials. A step in natural living that not only focuses on what we put into our bodies, but also looks at what we put on our bodies, i.e. the fabric in our clothes that touch the largest organ in our bodies, our skin.

There are clothing manufactures today that are producing clothes now that are produced out of organically grown material. Materials such as organically grown cotton, wool, and hemp are some of the materials from which organic clothes are manufactured. Bamboo clothing is even an option for those who are seeking organic apparel.

Organic clothing is an option for those who are trying to live a natural, healthy lifestyle as well as those who are concerned about the well-being of our planet. By wearing clothes organic, people can keep a lot of man-made chemicals from touching their epidermis, such chemicals as formaldehyde, bromines, urea resins and halogens just to name a few. Organic clothes are free from these chemicals, so that your skin is only in contact with the natural material from which your clothes were made.

Some of the chemicals that are found in clothes that are not made from organic material can cause an allergic reaction to those who are wearing the clothes. Additionally, when considering about what babies or toddlers wearing next to their skin, chemicals are absorbed through osmosis; there is always the possibility that a child that has a wet diaper might provide enough moisture to allow some chemicals to be absorbed. With organic infant clothes that risk can be minimized. Another example could be a tee-shirt that is soaked in sweat, could that provide enough moisture for osmosis? That is question that may or may not have an answer, but by wearing organic cotton t shirts that risk can be eliminated.

Besides keeping a host of chemicals from making contact with our skin, it has been stated by some that organic clothing is more durable and wears longer than clothes that are constructed from non-organic material. This is an appealing feature to organic clothing; for example, sometimes people have a favorite article of clothes, they like its looks, the way it wears, the way it fits, but then it wears out and is no more, an organic article of clothing that they were fond of may stay with them longer.

Additionally, clothes that do not wear out quickly are friendlier to our planet, since they do not end up in a landfill so quick. One might also think of the benefits of hand me downs from organic clothes that are more durable, often baby clothes are handed down, and there could be the possibility of passing down organic toddler clothes down to future generations. One of the durable organic materials that organic clothes are manufactured from is hemp, which from centuries past has been used and known as a tough, resilient material that has been used to make rope, paper, and clothing.

For those who are considering organic clothing for whatever reason that is might be, whether it be to try to live a more natural, healthy existence, to be friendlier to our planet or more durable clothes. Additionally, they will find articles and a blog that has information on clothing and green eco-friendly living as well.

Eco-Clothes For the Eco-Chic

By Richard N. Williams

Eco-friendly clothing has never had a great reputation in the fashion industry. Mention eco-clothes to many people and they will think of hemp clothes, woolen sweaters and other dowdy sartorial items. But eco-fashion is changing and more and more people are taking notice of where their clothes come from, how they are made and the effect of fashion on the environment.

Eco-chic is a term becoming increasingly common in fashion circles; it is a term to describe clothing that is both stylish and kind to the environment, and as more and more people are turning to eco-chic clothing it is becoming a very prominent fashion movement.

What Makes Clothes Eco-Chic?

There are three factors that make clothing eco-chic:

* Sustainability
* Eco-friendly manufacturing
* Style

Sustainability

Clothing that is sustainable is manufactured from raw materials that will not diminish. There are a wide variety of materials that are sustainable and are used in clothing and some of them come from unusual sources. Bamboo clothing is one example. Bamboo is perhaps one of the most sustainable materials on the planet. Bamboo is a grass, and a fast growing one at that, in a day bamboo can grow several inches with entire fields able to replenishing themselves in a matter of days or weeks. Bamboo clothing is also ideal for clothing. It is soft and comfortable; feeling very much like cotton, and is also thermosensitive - keeping you cool when its warm and vice versa.

Eco-Friendly Production

Bamboo is also eco-friendly in the way it is produced. Being so sustainable there is never a need to encourage and protect its growth with herbicides or pesticides but it is not alone in being an eco-friendly material. Organic cotton is another example of material and clothing that is produced without the use of harsh chemicals to grow but there are other, even more readily available examples. Wool that is untreated by chemicals is a perfectly natural and eco-friendly material too.

Stylish

While many clothes are eco-friendly only those that look stylish and fashionable can be classed as eco-chic. And while fashion is subjective and ever-changing the materials that can be used in manufacture of our fashion items can remain eco-friendly.

Bamboo clothing, organic cotton and pure wool can be manufactured into all sorts of fashion items from organic cotton t-shirts, bamboo active wear to pure wool duvets.

What is Eco-Fashion? - A Few Ideas

"Gorgeous in Green" Eco-Fashion ShowImage by Liwei Jiang via FlickrBy Jack Wogan

The fashion industry draws a lot of attention every year, with all the controversial shows and trends it submits to the public eye. These past few years, designers and fabric producers have started making a statement concerning the effects of the industry on our planet and as a result, eco-fashion was born.

Also called sustainable fashion, it refers to clothing that is made out of environmentally safe fabrics, using responsible production techniques. It is part of a larger trend of sustainable design, which means the creation of a product while keeping in mind the impact it can have on nature throughout its lifespan.

One of the main characteristics of eco-friendly clothes is that they are made out of raw, organic materials, which means the fibers have been grown without any pesticides, preserving the health of the environment and of people. Many products are also vegan, which means that they do not utilize leather or other types of animal tissue. They are also processed without using bleaches or chemicals that could be harmful.

Secondly, everyone knows that many ecological products are recycled, and this includes clothes that can be made out of already existing materials and fibers. Producers use previously made clothing and accessories and turn them into new ones, then sell them for an appropriate price.

Continuing on the path of previously owned things, vintage stores have also been all the rage lately, entertaining all sorts of clients - from suburban housewives to superstars - and offering a great variety of pieces. You can even find classic fashions items hidden in some second-hand stores or in thrift markets, so don't ignore the possibility of shopping in such places.

Another very important feature of eco-chic clothes is that they are produced in an ethical environment, which means that the people that make them are reasonably paid and have a healthy workplace. Knowing this, even if you have to pay a bit more to buy them, you can wear your outfits proudly and with a clear conscience.

Nowadays, one can easily see that "going green" has become a very popular trend: people eat organic food, wear eco-friendly clothes, use less fuel and recycle their waste. If you are an environment lover yourself, do your part of the job and help preserve the planet. It's not difficult to do, but it sure pays off in the future!

All Saints are offering clothing such as boots for men, jackets, designer suits and t-shirts for all occasions.

The Ugg Boot Trademark Dispute

By Casey S Gordon

Ugg Boots are now known all over the world for their ability to keep the feet of the wearer warm even in very cold climates. For this specific reason, Ugg Boots can be worn even without socks and this has made the shoes immensely popular all over the world. It isn't certain whether they were first made in Australia or New Zealand and much water has flown under the bridge since then. The Ugg Boot trademark controversy has also seen a revival in the past few years as well.

History of Ugg Boots

Historically they were worn by pilots, surfers and shearer's way back in the 1920's in Australia. Then in the 1970's, they became favorites of surfers and swimmers who wore them after competitions to keep their feet warm. Since the they are made of sheepskin, they help to keep the temperature warm and keep the feet insulated.

Though the boots were earlier made in such a way that both men and women could wear them, lately specific trends have been incorporated for women's Ugg Boots as well. Soon these boots acquired cult status and became quite a fashion trend in the 2000's. Many celebrities have also started endorsing these shoes and this is the reason that they have become quite popular.

Both New Zealand and Australia claim that they were the first ones to manufacture the boots. However it is clear that the production of the boots started in 1933 by the 'Blue Mountains Ugg Boots" company. However these boots (then known as flying Ugg Boots or Fug Boots) were being used by aviators way back in the 1920's when the cockpits of the airplanes weren't pressurized and they required the boots to ensure that their feet stayed warm. Even rural shearers and farm hands were using the shoes in the 1920's.

Actually the term Ugg Boot is really a broad and non-specific term that has been used for sheepskin shoes whether they have been manufactured in Australia or New Zealand. It can be said that it is really a generic term.

Sales beyond Australia

In the 1970's the trademark dispute was extremely widespread when an Australian surfer named Shane Steadman started selling these boots and shoes and then registered them as a trademark. In 1979, another Australian surfer known as Brian Smith actually bought these shoes to United States for selling and registered his company as Ugg Holdings Inc. and bought the trademark from Steadman.

Now the trademark has been registered in 25 countries. However Smith sold his holdings to Decker Outdoor Corporation. Since the trademark was registered in 25 countries, Decker sent cease and desist letters to all the Australian manufacturers from using the name Ugg Boots. But the issue wasn't pressed further.

The Trademark Row Resolved

Suddenly in 2000, as a result of celebrity endorsements, the demand for the shoes soared incredibly and Australian manufacturers started selling under the name Ugg Boots. As per a court ruling now, 'Ugg Boots' is a generic term that can be used by manufacturers that use sheepskin to make boots. However in other countries, manufacturers can't use this term with reference to the boots made of sheepskin.

Let's Talk About How Cufflinks Invaded the Fashion Industry

Stigworks 81, A Trio Of Cufflinks 5Image by the justified sinner via Flickr
By Adam English

During the 1960s, the British invasion took place in America. It was not a colonizing act but there was an influx of British pop bands in the USA. This event gave rise to new music trends and dress styles that flooded not only the Americans but everyone across the Atlantic. It was actually the first time that England was able to produce a sound that was uniquely British and original.

It was more than just an awakening. It was what most people call a "holistic conversion" of what the Americans forced upon the population of the music lovers all over the world. The Beatles music was introduced complete with its own hair style, clothing and language. There were other bands that were introduced as well. They were naturally introduced and they became memorable in their own right.

During this era, there was a huge diversity of sounds from the Hollies, Eric Burden and the Animals, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Tom Jones, the Troggs, Moody Blues and a whole lot more. Each was easily recognized with their own "sound."

America was not able to resist the British invasion. They could do nothing about and instead of fighting it off, they simply capitalized on their style and mass produced everything that the British introduced. Eventually, record companies realized that a band with the right sound and individual personalities (even without that much talent), if marketed effectively, could turn huge profits.

Other than the music scene, the British invasion also infiltrated other aspects of American life: a diverse group of designers were already branding a different range of cufflinks that were all distinct from each other. This huge wave of British influenced cufflinks started two decades after the death of the American cufflinks designer, Swank, that produced twelve million pairs of cufflinks annually and they peaked during the latter part of the 1960s.

On the other hand, the English flavour was focusing more on mass production and they produce funky, flamboyant and loudly designed cufflinks which was in perfect contrast to other cufflinks being produced by other designers. And people who have kept abreast with the development of cufflinks would surely know the difference between the Brit designed cufflinks and those that are not.

Dandy styles were reinvented and produced by Beau Brummell. He, George Bryan Brummel, was the arbiter of men's fashion in England and he was a very close friend of the Prince Regent. He was the one who introduced men who wore understated, but nicely fitted, tailored dark suits and full-length trousers with an elaborately-knotted cravat to finish the entire look.

To this day, Beau Brummell is always remembered for his modern man's suit with necktie. He was the one who introduced and established it as a formal man's wardrobe. His original style was often referred as dandyism although Brummell, surely, would not have agreed to the description.

As for cufflinks, no one really knows when men started wearing cufflinks in the United States. However, what was clear was that it was often worn by high-class men and they were accessories reserved exclusively for the wealthy classes.

Adam English invites you to take a look at the latest mens cufflinks offered at Cufflinks.co.uk. Specialists in sterling silver cufflinks, men's unique gifts and accessories - you're certain to find something to your liking.

Ugg Boots Profile

Uggs boots being manufactured in Australia at ...Image via Wikipedia
By Dave James Anthony

Ugg Boots are a traditional form of footwear that originated in the Southern Hemisphere in Australia. They are created by using sheep skin for the outer of the boot and using sheeps wool for the inner lining to create a highly comfortable boot. They were particularly popular amongst farmers within the region as they helped to shield their feet from the harsh winters.

During the 1960's the boots began to become popular amongst surfers who would pull them on after exiting the ocean to help keep their feet free from the irritation of sand. One such surfer was Brian Walker who was also something of an entrepreneur and decided to finance a surfing trip to the west coast of the United States of America by taking a pallet of Ugg Boots with him to sell to locals when he arrived. The boots sold well, so well in fact that in 1979 he set up a company Ugg Holdings Incorporated to distribute the boots across the states.

During the early part of the twenty first century the boots started to develop a cult following amongst celebrities in Hollywood causing the popularity of the boots to soar. Seeing this success the large Australian company Decker decided to buy the company and one of their first actions was to trademark the name Ugg Boots.

Decker ramped up their distribution network to expand it into Asia and Europe, with their products being particularly popular within the United Kingdom. Today they have expanded their output to make boots for women, men and children.

They're Back - The Return of the Wide Leg Pants

Bell-bottoms worn by Jimi Hendrix at the famou...Image via Wikipedia
By Tee Hamilton

Since I wasn't born until 1981 I missed out on the 60's and 70's fashion revolution. Clothes went from the groovy man, love peace and soul look to the punk rock, grunge and cross colors look. So I missed the whole bell bottom era. However I have been around to see different fashions repeat itself. Some of my favorites that I think are timeless pieces are blue jean jackets, mini skirts, and any type of blazers. These are fashions to keep in your closet for sure.

The latest trend, bell bottoms that I mentioned, are a fabulous repeat of time. In 2010 they aren't actually called bell bottoms any longer. Their called wide-leg or flare pants now. Someone decided to give them a more modern name I guess. Although I know all fashions are not for every fabulous girl, you could pull it off with the right style know-how.

If you are thinking about rocking a pair let me give you a few tips.

1. Always wear a fitted top or a blouse you can tuck in. Don't put on a top that makes your upper half look bulky. Ultimately that will make you appear heavy.

2. If you can add a belt to balance your look out that would be great. You don't want to look like your top is running into your bottom. Break it up.

3. Finally put on some pumps. Heels with wide-leg pants give the illusion of longer legs. Everyone wants to have legs like the trees in Babylon so don't make a stumpkin out of your self.

An Overview of Fashion in the 1970's

Hippies de Valdivia (Chile)Image by leo.prie.to via Flickr
By Ann Barrago

Fashions in the 1970's were far more relaxed than those in the 1960's before, many emerging design showed signs of nostalgia with designers taking influence from previous decades. Laura Ashley was noted as being heavily influenced by Edwardian style dresses and prints. Barbara Hulanicki's Biba label produced a 20's/30's influenced look with long cotton skirts, long sleeved shirts or smock and a floppy brimmed hat. The use of 30's inspired colourings, the two tone black and cream or brown and cream, could be seen in shoes and 'office work wear' styles.

By looking back the fashion designers were still continuing the new fashion trends for the new ideas, ideologies and social freedoms that were sought for both men and women.

Distinct fashion styles for certain youth groups became apparent again through this decade in the attempt of identification of the differing subcultures. Several mainstream trends came and went such as the glam fashion (David Bowie inspired) and disco fashion. (John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever 1977). The hippie/ethnic fashion trends of flared jeans, tie die shirts, peasant blouses, hair-bands and sandals continued from the sixties. More influence from other cultures became incorporated as social awareness of social and environmental issues increased.

In the early seventies the short skirts and 'hot pants' launched by Mary Quant in the 60's were still very popular, dresses however were available for all in three established lengths, the mini (as the mini skirt), the midi (calf length) and the maxi (ankles). Long flowing 'boho' skirts and the inspired hippie styles were very popular.

Footwear started to become more exotic with the platform shoes that appeared in the early seventies, their huge soles of several inches thickness for mainly women and some men! Health warnings accompanied this fashion about potential damage to your back, although you do not hear many people saying they injured their back in the 70's wearing platform shoes!

Men's clothing continued on the brighter flamboyant note from the previous decade. Flared denim jeans, once a symbol of manual work and now a fashion statement, along with a cheesecloth shirt is perhaps the most common image associated with men from the 70's. However the glitter, heels, bright colours and disco-wear was available for all genders as the trends passed through.

Lapels on all shirts and jackets grew in size and the kipper tie appeared to be necessary for the smarter male outfit. Longer hair and beards were considered very fashionable for men, the hippie and psychedelic influences were still in the fashion statements although the pop music had started to move on.

By the end of the seventies it was socially acceptable for most people to wear jeans and mostly flared jeans at that. Printed T-shirts became very popular in this decade along with trainers and canvas shoes. The inspiration and ideals behind the hippie styles from the late 60's were not as apparent in society but the fashions stayed.

Then Punk Fashion emerged onto the scene with the original Punk band, The Sex Pistols. The legendary Vivien Westwood was the partner of The Sex Pistols' promoter, Malcolm McLaren, and is credited with creating the original Punk look.

This look was based around black leather, ripped denim and slogans on T-shirts intended to provoke and insult people who thought along what was considered mainstream ideals. The punk message was 'destroy'. This destruction was of anything considered as mainstream good taste. Spiked hair dyed bright colours and second hand clothes ripped to shreds to demonstrate a rejection of the accepted fashions and ideals. The punk trend continued well into the 1980's.
