Today's Trends that Began in the 1960s

on RetroKimmer: http://www.retrokimmer.com/2013/09/todays-trends-that-began-on-1960s.html

1960s fashion was unlike any other decade because the clothing was as revolutionary and fast-moving as the era’s sweeping social, political and cultural changes.

It’s thanks to 1960s fashion that women are wearing everything from skirts above the knee to knee-high boots; empire waists to “no waists” and leopard print to printed stockings. And as unbelievable as it sounds, without the boundary-pushing fashion inventions of the ’60s, today’s woman would be unable to purchase a pair of formal pants.

Just like the changes of the ’60s themselves, the clothing trends were similarly groundbreaking and for the most part, completely new and novel ideas to the landscape of fashion. Read More

Through The Decades: 1960s Vintage Clothing

Young woman in fashion of the era standing by ...

by Emma Brown

The 1960's was a decade that broke barriers in terms of fashion, especially for women.

When purchasing vintage clothes, you are automatically buying into a piece of fashion history, but when buying vintage clothes from the swinging sixties, you really are buying a piece of history that moulded the fashion industry from then on.

The sixties is a decade of fashion that had so many trends that began in the era, that when buying vintage there is so much choice it's hard to pick.

In the beginning of the decade Jackie Kennedy was still wearing the famous skirt and trouser suits and pillbox hats, a trend that withstood nearly 7 years of season changes, so style was somewhat conservative.

However all that changed when Mary Quant, a Welsh designer and British fashion icon developed the mini skirt and encouraged women to hike up their hemlines. The majority of miniskirts or mini dresses had geometric patterns, some often with bell sleeves and/or polo necks.

The 'space' look was also an integral part of fashion culture and believe it or not, people donned goggles paired with go go boots and clothes made from PVC or sequins. All these looks were paired with big hair, false eyelashes and pale lipstick.

As the era moved on so did the culture and the fashion, with the hippy trend becoming huge psychedelic patterns were everywhere. Bandanas were paired with bell bottom jeans and paisley prints and the emphasis on having hair as high as the sky wasn't as important as in previous years.

However, probably one of the most significant trends to ever emerge into fashion, mainly for men, was the mod style.

The importance of this new way of dressing is integral to fashion today and is probably one of the main reason why 1960's vintage fashion is so sought after in today's day and age, given the fact that men like Paul Weller still make it 'cool' to embody the style.

The mod style personified British fashion of the era and very much moulded a new lifestyle as well as dress code.

Consisting of tight trousers, anoraks, shirts and ties, the key to pulling it off was combining a smart, gentlemanly look with a small amount of grunge to give an edge. The look was ultimately unisex and the women wore similar clothes and had short cropped hair.

This style has become something of a timeless classic, which in turn creates a need for vintage originals.

The whole scene reeks of the cool element that vintage brings and having a fundamental part of the first release of these fashions seems to be part of the process if you want to be a fully fledged mod.

Vintage fashion from the sixties is not for the faint hearted, and wearers have to be brave enough to make a statement with their clothes.

When choosing a trend to bring back to life from the sixties it is important to pick the right one, the styles are so iconic that it can sometimes look like fancy dress, the key thing with 1960s vintage clothes is to blend it so it looks kitsch, not cliche.

Jimi Hendrix T-Shirts: Find Out Where You Can Get the Best Deal Online

Gypsy Sun and Rainbows
Cover of Gypsy Sun and Rainbows
by Martin Seij

When you consider the variety of merchandise available about Jimi Hendrix, for anyone to look for a specific product it would be very convenient to be able to go to a website that provides all this information without any pressure to buy.

You, and you alone will decide whether or not you are ready to spend your money online. That is no concern of mine. However what you should expect to find online, is an honest overview of all the available merchandise.

This article will specifically go into the variety of T-shirts that are available with Jimi's image on them. You can search for the color of the T-shirts, like a purple, light red or even orange T-shirt. Or even more specific, you can search for a T-shirt that shows the name of one of the songs.

For example you could be looking for a Stone Free T-shirt, or one that says Foxy Lady. Another way to find what you need, is to look for the places that Jimi played. We all remember Woodstock or Monterey. There are specific T-shirts available on these subjects.

Now it would be pretty obvious to find a purple shirt that says Purple Haze now wouldn't it? But it's not like that. There are many combinations that you can imagine for colors, names of songs or just a picture of the band on it.

How about a Jimi Hendrix T-shirt of the song Little Wing that shows little wings? Sure, you can find those as well. Popular songs like Foxy Lady or Machine Gun will have their own versions available. And even specific songs from the Band of Gypsies album, like Power of Love can be found on a T-shirt.

Although most of the shirts are short sleeve, you can also find some long sleeve shirts. What I like about the variety available online, is that even though most of the shirts are black, there are also a number of shirts available in different kinds of colors. And to be honest some pictures will look better on a black shirt then for example on a white shirt.

A very special one to me is the army colored shirt with the face of Hendrix on it. Anyone who knows anything about Hendrix and the timeframe he was in, will understand that this shirt is the biggest contradiction you can imagine.

Furthermore there are shirts that represent the different gigs that he did. For example there is Monterey, Copenhagen and of course Woodstock. And since there was a Hendrix tribute tour in 2012, that specific shirt is also available on the Official Hendrix website.

This shirt will show all the 21 gigs that Billy Cox and his friends did to honor this great guitar player. It doesn't get any more special than this!

So if you are looking for a specific Jimi Hendrix T-shirt you can do your search on google or any other browser you prefer. What you will come up with is an overview of online shops that offer the same shirt, for different prices.

So what is the best deal? You will have to compare the quality and look for additional charges for shipping. Do you want to do that? Or do you want to have a selection of shirts available to you in one place?

When you are a true Jimi Hendrix fan you will know where to shop for merchandise. And every now and then a new website will pop up providing you with all the information and links to Jimi you need.

I will gladly provide you with a link to one of those new sites that will help you find the best deal for Jimi Hendrix T-shirts.

Go to the Play Like Jimi official website and look for the Jimi Hendrix T-shirts available online. If you want to see us play live, check out our tourdates. We would love to see you there!

VIDEO: Space-Age Futurism Fashion - Mort Garson 1960's

by cosmocorps2000, on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/user/cosmocorps2000?feature=watch

Hi readers, here's a short clip about the quite bizarre futuristic fashion of the 1960's from designers like Pierre Cardin, André Courrèges, Paco Rabanne etc. Most of the scenes are from the German TV Show "Paris Aktuell". The music is "DEJA VU" from Mort Garson's Ataraxia: The Unexplained (1975).

Is this really what they thought we'd be wearing in the 21st century? Enjoy!

The Mods - Lifestyle, Fashion and Music

A promotional photo of British rock group The ...

By Jade Jennison

The 1960s introduced a complete new variety of youths to Britain and shook the world for years to come. These youths brought mass media coverage and called themselves 'mods' coming from the word 'modernists'.

It was neither a fashion style nor a music genre but a lifestyle. This group of people were the first youths that did not have to go out to work since the World War began so spent their extra money on stylish clothes and general entertainment.

This rebellious stage was for the typical working-class youngster who would prefer to spend their money on clothes; vinyls and alcohol fuelled events rather than food. Although these people were labelled as 'good for nothing kids,' there is no denying that the excitement of the culture and styling of the clothing is extremely appealing.

The Mod revolution was begun by 'teddy boys' who were influenced by the rock and roll which was being released in America and were generally well-known for their immense fashion taste. These stylish and wealthy young men and women dressed to impress with the men wearing slick suits inspired by an Edwardian style whilst the women sported a similar expensive fashion.

Working-class mods were inspired by such style but rebelled against the typical Edwardian suit-wearing teddy boys and created their own sense of fashion which is still seen as stylish today.

With the up-rise of mod subculture the music industry exploded with the likes of The Who, The Kinks, The Small Faces and more who fit into this specific music category. These types of people generally enjoyed socialising in music-filled all night clubs and coffee shops. They preferred to travel on Lambretta scooters accessorised with lights.

The typical male mod would be sporting either a full-tailored suit or a polo shirt, similar to the Fred Perry polo shirts manufactured today, and would almost always finish their outfit with a parka coat or a Harrington jacket. They had a specific style of haircut and always wore tailored shoes.

Female mods would wear flamboyant dresses, mini skirts and blouses with distinctive hairstyles and smart shoes.

As this typical style became more commercial, models, most famously Twiggy became the epitome of this particular fashion era. This caused a huge stir for the scene as it was no longer a distinctive lifestyle but becoming popular all across the country upsetting the scene and allowing it to eventually die out.

Despite this fact, some people attempt to relive such an important fashion within history by purchasing similar items to the previous mod style. Films like Quadrophenia and the introduction of The Jam to the music scene in the late 1970s early 1980s were both stimulated by the past and such fashions began to rise again.

Famously Paul Weller, the face of Fred Perry and frontman of The Jam, sported a look similar to the mod-style which is still achievable now.

In this modern day, clubs and fashions are still influenced by this particular style and it is still possible to get a gist of such an amazing era.

The Return of the Creepers

Creepers shoes Transparent                                  Image via WikipediaBy Sami Brown

As years go by, we tend to see fashion trends repeat themselves; this applies to creepers shoes which are also known as brothel creepers.

In the beginning, around World War 2, soldiers based in deserts, wore these shoes to protect their feet from the heat so they did this by wearing thicker soled shoes, which were given the name 'creepers'. When the soldiers left the army and came home to London, they continued to wear this footwear which began a trend of fashion.

Brothel creepers are usually made with a black or white leather or suede upper but are occasionally made with bright suede's such as red or blue for a complete statement shoe. Creepers regularly feature a small lace fastening with metal eyelets in the shape of a letter 'D' instead of the usual round shape, but buckle fastenings are also quite popular among men.

The sole of the shoe is the most distinctive part of the shoe as it is extra thick in comparison to other footwear, ranging from a small one inch sole to a three-inch platform sole being the largest. Although it seems that brothel creepers are heavy shoes to walk around in all day, they seem worth the weight due to their complete different look next to other footwear.

Men were the regular wearers of creepers and were commonly known as 'Teddy boys'. This subculture involved young men following an American rock and roll vibe, wearing skinny trousers, velvet and quiffs.

In the 1970's creepers became popular again and various other subcultures such as Indies, Punks and Goths wore this style. From the success of this popular shoe, many more designs and styles came about, with three different sole thicknesses available including triple soles, which flocked not only England, but worldwide.

Whilst creepers were originally a men's shoe style, women are now choosing to wear them too. With leading footwear retailers now supplying a huge range of creepers, there are now pairs that a specifically available to women and feature a thick platform which is level with the chunky heel height which adds a femininity element to the footwear, girly colours are also used to differentiate the women's shoes from the mens.

Similar to other fashion trends, brothel creepers ease in and out of the fashion circle. The bespoke design of creepers footwear is a stand out trend that resembles a rock and roll vibe which is regularly worn by bands and musicians.

Go Retro Luscious - Get Trendy In Retro Style!

Saturday Toys Men's Clothes Series - Men Suit ...Image by shaun wong via FlickrBy Stewart Wrighter

Remembering the 70's era, the first thing that comes to mind is men's wear. Home decor and furnishing of any modular house was a big hit of that time. Honestly, men's retro style is never outdated. It is one style where you feel far out and tripping. Those funky disco shirts, leisure suits and vibrant polyester disco pants were always a treat to watch. All thanks to the retro era, people living in average modular homes now have a dressing sense.

For a lot of you guys, showing up in every get together in formal clothing is no fun. It gets so freaking boring. Get a break, change your attire. The next time you show up in a party, dress up in retro style. Just by doing that, you can make the event a lasting memory.

Often, people get confused between retro and vintage style. Retro is mainly the post 60's style, whereas, vintage is pre 60's. When you plan to dress like that, choosing the right piece for your wardrobe can be a bit of a task. However, it is worth taking some time when you are adding style with every item you purchase.

Although retro is a whole world of style, you still need to keep up with the latest trends. This way, you will be able to update your look while adding style at the same time. Those skinny pair of jeans in dark wash is awesome for the fall. How about adding a nostalgic touch with 80's style throwback? Also the classic British-inspired hat will go well with your trendy jacket.

Besides, a retro bike jacket only tends to get better with age. You would not find anything like a conditioned aged jacket. This leather is slightly pricy but worth the investment of a lifetime. If you are a collector then try retro style jackets from the 60's or 80's for a similar silhouette.

Another fabulous piece that is never out of trend is denim. The fabric goes well with jackets, shirts or even jeans. From the past four decades, denim has been a clear winner because it lasts a long time and you will end up with good quality material that complements your retro style.

Mention of retro style is incomplete without cowboy boots or the 70's trainers. They make a great retro buy. It is hard to find them with the same retro style detailing but your best bargain is the filigree, cut-out styles. They are superior in style and make a comfortable wear. As for trainers, you have the freedom to pick bright colors and cool designs.

A retro style can be greatly accented with the right accessories. Again, it is hard to find the same old style anymore; you will still come across some pieces that can really complement your retro style.

As for the shopping spree, you need to be careful while buying clothes and accessories. Do not be tempted to purchase fake replicas. The item you purchase should have the retro style and must perfectly match your taste. Once you feel good, looking good comes naturally.

Stewart Wrighter has noticed an increase of modular homes being built because of their low cost. He and his wife are considering a modular house to use as a vacation home.

They're Back - The Return of the Wide Leg Pants

Bell-bottoms worn by Jimi Hendrix at the famou...Image via Wikipedia
By Tee Hamilton

Since I wasn't born until 1981 I missed out on the 60's and 70's fashion revolution. Clothes went from the groovy man, love peace and soul look to the punk rock, grunge and cross colors look. So I missed the whole bell bottom era. However I have been around to see different fashions repeat itself. Some of my favorites that I think are timeless pieces are blue jean jackets, mini skirts, and any type of blazers. These are fashions to keep in your closet for sure.

The latest trend, bell bottoms that I mentioned, are a fabulous repeat of time. In 2010 they aren't actually called bell bottoms any longer. Their called wide-leg or flare pants now. Someone decided to give them a more modern name I guess. Although I know all fashions are not for every fabulous girl, you could pull it off with the right style know-how.

If you are thinking about rocking a pair let me give you a few tips.

1. Always wear a fitted top or a blouse you can tuck in. Don't put on a top that makes your upper half look bulky. Ultimately that will make you appear heavy.

2. If you can add a belt to balance your look out that would be great. You don't want to look like your top is running into your bottom. Break it up.

3. Finally put on some pumps. Heels with wide-leg pants give the illusion of longer legs. Everyone wants to have legs like the trees in Babylon so don't make a stumpkin out of your self.

Mad Men - Pure 60's Style

By Todd Denning

As I'm sitting here in between television seasons and feeling nostalgic for my favorite show, Mad Men, I may just have to dress up my family and friends and keep the plot rolling along in my own invented world.

If you've never seen Mad Men, you're crazy! This Golden Globe and Emmy winning television drama that airs on the AMC channel is part high-brow drama, part social commentary, and part uncanny kitschy fun. Set your Tivo for season four in 2010 if you're not afraid to dive into the issues of cigarette smoking, drinking, sexism, adultery, homophobia, anti-Semitism and racism that were prevalent in the 1960s.

One thing that you'll notice right away when watching Mad Men is the historical authenticity and visual style of the 60s costumes, sets and locations. Stylists spend painstaking time to recreate a snapshot of this bygone time, shopping thrift stores, hunting through antique markets, borrowing from private collections and creating replica clothing, furniture and props. With a little bit of ingenuity, a raid through a grandparent's closet and some good costume props, you can create a Mad Men costume of your choice.

Imagine the ultra-cool you exude when you walk into the room as Don Draper, one of the partners of the fictional NYC ad agency. You just need a dark suit and a thin black tie to pull of the classic and dashing silhouette of this central character. Add some hair pomade and be sure to carry a silver cigarette lighter and glass half-filled with scotch.

Ladies will feel all Grace Kelly to dress up as his stunning, but icy-cold wife Betty Draper. Pay tribute to her former days as a model by dressing up in a retro evening gown and elbow-length gloves (for a client dinner, of course) or go for her sportier Mad Men costume, an equestrienne outfit. Don a wig if you don't naturally have her coiffed, blonde hair.

Other Mad Men costumes for women include Peggy, the secretary turned copywriter with her own office (gasp!) who is known for her short brunette bangs and pony tail. To pull off her Mad Men costume, a plaid dress will give you the nice, conservative style she prefers. For the more va-va-va-voom ladies, dressing up as office manager, Joan Holloway, will help you make a very memorable entrance. Just wear a red wig and make sure your curvy figure is accentuated in all the right places!

Men can dress as agency big-wig and silver fox, Roger Sterling, motivated up-and-comer Pete Campbell, creative-type Paul Kinsey or several of the other guys in the office. The one common denominator is they all pretty much wear the same 60s suit in some color variation. Add horn-rim glasses, bow-ties, vests, briefcases and other accessories that give your Mad Men costume extra flair. Click Here

Rock Revival Jeans - Worth Checking Out

By Mark LeBreton

You really do have to give Rock Revival Jeans a lot of credit for hitting on a concept that fuses pop culture with the fashion industry. The jeans associated in this line of clothing draw their influence and inspiration from the classic rock and roll look of past decades. This, in turn, opens the door for some truly amazing fashions statements and looks one could present.

And these jeans are available for both men and women shoppers with the line designed for women being among the most unique on the market.

And these jeans can certainly be employed for any occasion. Do you want casual jeans for everyday wear? Or, perhaps, you need a pair of jeans that would look rather good while headed out for a night on the town. Either way, you will find that Rock Revival Jeans certainly deliver on expectations for any event. This means they can be employed effectively no matter where you are going or what you are doing or have in mind.

This is not to say the jeans lack a specific edge to them. They most certainly do. In a way, you could say that women's Rock Revival Jeans are known for their ability to capture the 'bad girl' image that was once popular in the realm of classic rock and roll.

There is even a homage of sorts to the gothic look of the late 1970s and early 1980s. This is achieved, however, with a touch of class and not the garish grunge look of the 1990s which would undermine the potential to look decent in such jeans. These are not faddish or gimmick oriented jeans and they certainly do not present a boorish retro look. These are solidly reliable jeans that allow you to capture and evoke a specific image that can certainly raise eyebrows and draw attention. And is that not was classic fashion apparel is supposed to do in the first place?

Different styles of rock can be pictured in these particular jeans. There is a different between 1980s hard rock and 1970s country rock. Such differences are present in the variety of jeans offered. And, once again, the look has also been tweaked with a modern edge which allows them to avoid the lame retro look other fashion brands deliver.

And, best of all, these jeans are quite affordable considering the value that they deliver. You need not feel you will be spending a ton of money to look good. These jeans can improve your appearance without hitting your fashion budget too hard.

Mark L. has helped many women decide on the best fitting jeans for their body type. Whether it's denim from Rock Revival Jeans or other designers, he'll know what's best for you. Get F-R-E-E guides, reviews and deals for women's designer jeans at Rock Revival Jeans.

Dress Like the Hippies With Bohemian Clothing

By Daniel Hansen

The Hippie movement in 1960s in America was originally a reaction against conformity and consumerism. This intellectual movement originally started in San Francisco, U.S.A., when thousands of teenagers dressed unconventionally (became anti-fashion) to catch attention and express themselves in their own unique way. They even call their movement the "summer of love." Now, the hippies are considered to be the modern day gypsies, travelers or wanderers.

Though the hippies dress unconventional, they surely made one of the biggest changes in fashion industry today. Hippies dress in Bohemian clothing by dumping sports jacket, coats and suits in favor of army coats and denim jackets.

Bohemian lifestyle is originally sprung ten years earlier than the Hippie generation. American writer Ernest Hemmingway embraced this lifestyle for its Beat generation of writers. Bohemian originally defines an artist like painters, writers, etc., who don't live in accordance to the conventions of the society. Bohemian clothing is usually made up of cotton for comfort and are bright in colors. There are no strict colors for this style of clothing. Any shades from the colors of the rainbow and even black and white will do.

Denim jackets popularized by some biggest names in clothing industry today owe so much from the Hippie movement as street fashion like wearing blue jeans became classic fashion style today. It even rose into its highest popularity when Hollywood celebrities begun to wear Bohemian clothing in red carpet occasions.

The good thing about Bohemian clothing is its affordability. Its clothes are sold in affordable prices simply because of its original purpose which is anti-consumerism, thus designer collection clothes are unnecessary for this type of clothing for it usually targets the masses. Also, you can never get wrong with a simple plane white shirt, a pair of jeans and sneakers. Some Hollywood actors and actresses dress this way on the streets, and they still stand out from the crowd simply because they know how to carry themselves.

The secret of a good Bohemian outfit is finding the right combinations and feel confident to be able to carry yourself in the crowd.

Retro Sunglasses - The Vintage Collection For the Stylish Few

By Sunny Richard

They say: 'History repeats itself!' The statement certainly holds true when it comes to fashion clothes and accessories. Retro sunglasses also share the same sentiment. If you take a look at the latest collection of designer sunglasses, rarely will you find a designer that hasn't contributed to the retro looks and style.

When we say retro looks, it means the fashion as prevalent from 60s till 80s. From loud to chic to absurd, all kinds of sunglasses that formed an integral part of the fashion world during the past eras are getting re-hashed and presented in a manner consistent with modern tastes and preferences. For some reason, the style icons of modern times are reinventing the retro fashion and giving the connoisseurs a dose of golden times.

One good thing about having retro sunglasses as your style statement is that you are getting the best of the past in a newer improved version. In other words, the shortcomings of the previous products are being taken care of and given a new lease of life. For instance, the past sunglasses were not as high on protection as they are today. The UV protection encapsulated in modern sunglasses with retro looks was not even imaginable in those times.

So, what does all this mean to an ordinary fashion follower? It simply means that they are being offered the best of the past with time-tested looks and design blended with the ultra modern features, like UV protection. Take for instance, the oversized sunshades proudly adorned by the beautiful Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis that gained cult status for the modern generation. Cut to the first decade of twenty first century. The same oversized design and style is being re-invented by every designer house with minor variations to produce fully protected ultra chic retro sunglasses that have a consistently high demand among connoisseurs.

However, be prepared to spend astonishing amounts of money if you wish to own this piece of luxury because every designer has put a mind-boggling price tag on their products. Five Ways to Tell You Have a 1960's-1970s Vintage Men's Tie

By Jackie D.

The 60s through the 70s were an explosive period of time. A lot of things were going on politically and socially here and abroad, including in the world of fashion. Women burned their bras and men's ties got really big! Good thing they did because skinny neckwear no longer had a place in the clothing of the day. How can you tell that you've got a genuine article from this tumultuous time? Here goes:

Necktie Width

Neckwear became as wide as it was in the 1940's and in some cases even wider. You've heard people describe them as "fat polyester ties" and were they! Kipper neckties as they were known in the mid 60's were as wide as 6 inches in some cases. While today that may seem extreme, back then it was perfectly reasonable to match enormous neckwear with wide lapelled jackets and bell bottom pants. All clothing and accessories were proportionate to one another. If they weren't, they would look out of place. By the mid 70's some neckties shrunk back to 4 inches, so other criteria is also used to date them.

Type of Fabric

While neckwear continued to be made of silk, cotton, rayon, acetate and other various blends, it seems that polyester ruled. Thick polyester. And it's a good thing because it allowed a person to combine the bulky fabric with a Windsor knot to create a big knot.

Designs, Patterns and Color

All colors were popular, but it seems that most of us remember the earthy ones the most. Just picture the orange, brown and yellow striped ties which were commonly worn during that time. Also, the patterns were large to accommodate the large surface area. Many designs appear pretty psychedelic by today's standards and are reminiscent of the wallpaper found in homes during the 60's as well as women's fashion popular at the time.

The Color of the Facing

The facing of a necktie is the piece of material just behind the tip (on the underside) that is sewn to the back to provide protection as well as added longevity to neckwear. In the previous decade the facing was black or white if a tie had one at all. Sometimes the outer fabric was used in lieu of the facing and simply folded over to follow the shape of the tip. The color of the facing of 60's and 70's neckwear was as funky as the neckties themselves. Black, white, orange, yellow and red were common.

The Length and Weight of the Lining

The outer shell is wrapped around the lining (or interlining), which is what gives body to a tie. The lining is a shade of white and often has stripes which denote its weight. A balance is struck between the interlining and the outer fabric. Lightweight lining is better suited for heavier outer fabric and vice versa.

During the 60's and 70's single and double lining accompanied the shell of the necktie. Remember, wide thick neckwear was in vogue. The interlining typically ended several inches above the tip and could easily be seen by spreading open the back of the tie.

By contrast, today's neckwear features a single lining which reaches all the way to the tip and is hidden behind the facing.

Conclusion

Well, there you have it. Both the look and the construction of men's tie can be used to determine their age.

Birkenstock and Their Products

By James S Thompson

Soft footbed is the name given to the specially shaped shoe created by Konrad Birkenstock in 1897 designed to give extra support to the sole by matching it's contours more closely than traditional flat sole. Due to the untimely intervention of the industrial revolution and the introduction of the mass produced cheaper shoe a couple of years later his business floundered.

Wisely he changed strategy and changed from making shoes to producing contoured inserts for the mass produced versions and this worked out well for him. It was not until 1964 that his Grandson Karl started to design and produce footwear once again in the form of a sandal which was named the Madrid.

In 1966, Margot Fraser bought a pair of Madrid sandals thought they worked wonders for her feet which had troubled her since a child and decided to bring them into America. Until now Birkenstock had only spread across Europe and a shrewd move Margot acquired the sole distribution rights to Birkenstock's in the USA. She built the company and eventually stopped importing as Birkenstock's were now being produced in her own factories in the USA and new styles were developed and introduced.

In 1973 the Arizona sandal was introduced and this quickly became one of the best known footwear products ever designed and manufactured. Sandals and clogs were the main products and with the patented soft footbed incorporated into them Birkenstock became the favorite women's sandals brand and remains extremely popular today.

Other brand names advertise themselves as Birkenstock or offer the soft footbed sole in their products and they are the genuine articles. What Margot did as the company grew larger was to allow certain companies that could match Birkenstock's high standards of design and manufacture to produce these products under licence. Among these successful companies are Tatami, Papillio, Footprints, New-walk, Alpro and Betula sandals who are now creating sandals, clogs and shoes based on original Birkenstock designs.

Alpro shoes is another licensed manufacturer of Birkenstock styled footwear who specialize in work wear from heavy industry to nursing and catering. They supply a range of comfortable working clogs that can have the following features. Steel toes for protection on building sites and in factories that meet with health and safety regulations. Non slip soles developed to be resistant to sliding on oil based substances and other chemicals with uppers resistant oil or chemical penetration.

Clogs which can be safely and repeatedly hot washed and disinfected without causing them any damage which are widely used in the medical profession. Incorporating the Birkenstock footbed sole and a raised toe bar for a more natural walking motion these are extremely comfortable working shoes that can be worn throughout the day giving maximum support for your feet to avoid getting sore feet.

As of 2002 the Birkenstock Company became completely owned by its workers when Margot sold the shares she had in it to her employees thirty five years after founding the company. Today the company still enjoys great success and products like the Arizona and Madrid sandals designed in the seventies still sell extremely well.

Betula sandals are popular women's sandals as they have a soft footbed design for comfort.

New John Lennon Sunglasses

By Steve Cranie

Whether you call them John Lennon sunglasses, Round sunglasses or Tea-Shades there's no mistaking their iconic status thanks to the legendary Beatle. They are just as popular now as they were 40 years ago when he first wore them, they are most definitely here to stay.

The John Lennon sunglasses are formed by two circular lenses mounted in a wire frame and were originally known as "Teashades". They first became popular in the 1960's inspired by Lennon's fondness for them. Other rockers like Mick Jagger and Jerry Garcia also wore them in that era. Heavy Metal God Ozzy Osbourne still wears the circular shades to this day and Liam Gallagher wore them in the Wonderwall video. The glasses worn by Seraph in the Matrix Reloaded are Teashades. And most recently, Mary-Kate Olsen has revived the fashion industry's interest in them by frequently wearing classic John Lennon sunglasses.

However when we think of Teashades we think of John Lennon, and we know we're not alone in that respect. The term is undisputedly the phrase most often used to describe these sunglasses. The black and white photo of John Lennon standing cross-armed, wearing a "New York City" sleeveless t-shirt, and his sunglasses is perhaps the most popular still photo of Lennon. This portrait does its part to see Lennon's legend stays radiant and his sunglasses forever in demand.

Round sunglasses are rarely found in shops these days although they can be found at many costume websites. The majority of these are cheap and basic products aimed predominantly at the novelty market. John Lennon sunglasses have been designed and manufactured to eliminate the problems commonly associated with such products and are aimed at more discerning customers.

The perfectly cut lenses set in well constructed frames eliminate gaps around the edges and they provide full UV protection complying to the latest European standards. Highly specified materials provide durable and perfectly aligned frames, these are premium plated to give an enhanced appearance and a longer life. The tensioned temples further enhance the overall quality. All this is backed up by a 12 months warranty against manufacturing defects. John Lennon sunglasses are available in two sizes and in a great choice of lens and frame colours.

We first started up a UK based online sunglasses business many years ago motivated by the lack of choice of affordable good quality sunglasses in a market dominated by premium designer sunglasses brands. From the outset it was clear that there was a large demand for round John Lennon style sunglasses but we struggled to find good quality products we could sell at affordable prices. We were limited to either low quality products, usually sold through costume suppliers, or very expensive high end designer products. Having a passion for such sunglasses ourselves we decided to do something about it.

And so JohnLennonsSunglasses.com was born. All our products are purchased exclusively by us directly from our supplier and manufactured to our own specification. This has allowed us to produce a high quality product whilst keeping our prices affordable.

Clark's Wallabees - A Fashionable Classic

By Jane Barron

Today, Clarks Shoes produces almost 35 million pairs of shoes a year. But despite its international success, the company had humble beginnings. Founded in 1825 by Cyrus and James Clark in the small English village of Street in Somerset, Clarks Shoes began as nothing more than a local sheepskin slipper business. The small business endured, however, and by the mid 1900's Clarks was an international success.

One of Clarks' most recognized and popular shoes is the Clark's Wallabee. This shoe was first designed by Lance Clark in 1965 as the world's first "comfort shoe", and it is experiencing a resurgence in popularity today. The Wallabee is a soft shoe made from suede or leather that is stitched like a moccasin. The traditional Wallabees were slip-ons but today you can find Clark's Wallabees in several different styles including oxfords, hiking shoes and boots.

The shoes are extraordinarily comfortable; some versions of the Wallabees even have soft sheepskin lining (shearling) that will keep your feet feeling snug and warm. But though Wallabees may be so comfortable you feel like you are wearing slippers, they are built solidly enough to endure all kinds of daily wear and tear. With solid stitching and a flexible yet firm crepe bottom, Clark's Wallabees are shoes that are designed to last. You can think of them as a long-term investment to your footwear collection.

Clark's Wallabees is a particularly good choice of footwear for people who suffer from foot injuries or foot deformities. They have been known to help people who are suffering from heel pain (plantar fasciitis) or arthritic toes, or who are convalescing after foot surgery. The smooth, soft interior of the Wallabee ensures that it will not rub or irritate the delicate skin of your feet.

When you wear Wallabees, you won't have to worry about blisters, hot spots or calluses - which makes these shoes a potentially great choice for diabetics or other people who need to be mindful of minor injuries on their feet. The other important feature of Clark's Wallabees (as far as the health of your feet is concerned!) is the shoe's wide toe box. Clark's Wallabees should give your toes plenty of room to spread out (as they would do naturally if you were going barefoot). This helps to prevent toe injuries and deformities such as hammertoe, clawtoe, bunions and ingrown toenails. The breathable leather or suede material of the shoe should also help to keep feet cool and dry.

Goodbye Tie-Dye

By Mary Michaels

Tie-dyed blouses or shirts could be associated with the "hippie" style of the early 70s as popularized by some music icons of that time. It was made popular in several countries all over the world. The popularity was easily gained as it was trendy and the looks can be achieved easily from simple to more complex processes.

Tie-dyeing uses bright colors and different dyeing methods in order to achieve the patterned designs in clothing. The basic tie-dye process can be done at home by applying different colors of dye on folded or knotted cloth. When the cloth absorbed the dye already, it is then set off to dry. Patterned lines and designs can be accomplished upon removing the knots after drying. The patterns made by the tie-dyeing process can be seen as a very appealing work of art. Changing the direction of the knots or twisting the material towards one direction could easily tweak the resulting pattern.

There are also other complex methods used by professionals in combining colors, applying dye and making more unique patterns. Different shapes and color combinations are achieved by using non-typical folds and patterns. The designs could also be further accented by rich embroideries or accessories.

As it is associated with bright colors and asymmetric designs, clothes that are tie-dyed are usually worn during the summer season. It is also for this reason that it is more widely used in tropical countries. Shirts and accessories made up from this process can be seen more often in beaches or summer picnics. Aside from colors, the materials that are usually tie-dyed are cotton. Clothes made up of cotton are worn during warm weather. And tie-dyed clothes commonly comes as a day-time shirt or shawl.

But in the middle of other high fashion styles, of flair and glamour, would there still be a place for tie-dyed materials?

As with other fashion styles, tie-dyeing can die slowly as time goes by. Other modern methods in accenting clothes are now being introduced. Too much colors on one attire is no longer eye-pleasing for the present day fashion. In contrast to the numerous bright colors and busy patterns of tie-dyed clothes, what is more popular now are plain black or white. Women would then just accessorized with gold or silver jewelries, belts, shoes and bags. While men's common dark suit could easily be concluded with a bow or tie and often cufflinks for added elegance.

Even casual wears have changed in trends and slowly adopted the monotonous white and black combination. Though some bright colors are still considered stylish like green, yellow, purple are red, they usually come in one-color dresses and no too-busy designs. Simplicity, clarity and cleanliness direct the current theme of fashion.

But even if modern fashion style would be bidding goodbye to tie-dyed clothes, surely this would be only for a short time. Because fashion has never said goodbye to any style permanently. The designs come and go and after several decades, they will come again with different packaging. So if you have tie-dyed clothes that you have not been able to wear for quite some time, just keep it on your closet. You will never know when you are going to use it just yet.

Mary Michaels invites you to take a look at the latest cufflinks offered at CanadaCufflinks.ca. Specialists in wedding cufflinks, men's unique gifts and accessories - you're certain to find something to your liking.

Eyeglasses, Retro-Chic!

By Hillary Rubin

It's officially 2009! Welcome to the new year! Our crystal ball predicts that the retro look will be blazin' this year! You won't be able to turn a corner without seeing sweater-dresses, brightly colored tights, leggings (yes! They're back!), and slouchy boots.

What does this mean for eyeglasses, you may ask? BIG things! HUGE! With the vintage looks in full force, retro-looking eyeglasses will be all the rage when paired with your favorite outfits! How do you get away with pairing your favorite retro looks with your favorite vintage-style glasses without making yourself look out-dated? It's easy and we'll tell you how!

The 1950's: back in the good ol' days, Buddy Holly's glasses were swell for guys and women like LeeRemick's eyeglasses in Anatomy of a Murder were so nifty.

So how do you wear the outfits of the 1950's without looking like you're IN the 1950's? Skinny jeans are hot these days, especially when worn with flats or loafers. Pair darker colored denim with a white shirt, perhaps a cardigan (a longer one is more modern looking) with some flat shoes and dark, plastic frames! Another option for women is to pair a modern looking bubble skirt with a tighter fitting tshirt, a pair of Mary-Jane shoes, and horn-rimmed glasses! Men can wear a cardigan as well but a black sweater over a white shirt with somewhat tighter jeans (think James Dean) is very hot!

The 1960's: when hoppin' and boppin' shifted to swayin' and protesting, clothing shifted from big and flowy to form-fitting and micro-mini. Faye Dunaway wore hip glasses in the Thomas Crown Affair and John Lennon switched between horn rimmed frames and metal eyeglass frames.

When replicating 60's chic, it's important to remember flower-power without looking like a flower-child. The early 60's were great with jumpers and brightly colored outfits. Today, we have brightly colored leggings (they have MUCH better coverage) that pair very well with t-shirt dresses, sweater dresses, and modern jumpers. When wearing something brightly colored- remember to pick accessories to accent it, like earrings or a necklace, but stay away from making your entire outfit the same bright color ... or even a few bright colors. You don't need to look like a fruit salad.

The 1970's: feelin' groovy? So was Jan Smithers in her eyeglasses from the hit show WKRP in Cincinnati! Punkin' out hard-core was Elvis Costello in his own version of the Buddy Holly eyeglass frame!

Fashion from the 70's really wasn't THAT bad ... unless you were one of the Village People. Wide legged pants are best paired with eyeglass frames that are slightly more delicate with cool chunk heeled boots (it elongates the leg) and a slim-fitting tshirt or sweater. Higher-waisted pants are a wonderful alternative to the popular low-rise but don't return to the 70's, keep it modern looking. Men can still get away with wearing a plaid shirt (lighter colored - no lumberjack styles!) over a white tshirt with some loose fitting jeans and a pair of aviators!

The 1980's: wide necked sweaters, leggings, leg warmers, sweater dresses, big hair AND big eyeglasses! Who can forget those times? Lots of people. D.M.C. of RUNDMC made big, black plastic eyeglass frames hip again! My first pair of glasses were similar to his - only blue!

Luckily, these styles are hot again but sweater dresses should only be worn with a thick belt and funky eyeglasses. Leg warmers can be worn under boots with leggings. Please steer clear of the big hair! Guys have it easy- a polo shirt with a popped up collar and aviators bring a modern take to Fast Times at Ridgemont High!

Class dismissed!
