Even if you don't purchase it by now everyone has heard of fair-trade products. Many people have been informed or told to purchase fair-trade chocolate, wine, coffee and many more types of food but have you thought about fair-trade clothing?

I must admit until recently I hadn't heard of fair-trade clothing so I've written the following article to inform you of this and why it's so important. Don't forget that although fair-trade products are often more expensive you're helping to build the welfare and generate money flow in less privileged countries so people can create a better life for themselves.

Although this type of clothing is mainly found in the U.S., it's worth looking into which shops within the United Kingdom will supply this type of clothing.

This is a system put in place like with cocoa bean farmers to ensure that the woman and children who make the clothing for our countries in others will be treated fairly. The aim is to ensure these people will be treated as fairly as they would if they worked in England or any other wealthy country. With fair-trade workers it's mandatory that they are given minimum wage so that they can feed their families. Along with this it is forbidden that children work like it would be in the UK. Also like in our home country the working conditions are monitored on a regular basis so that any changes can be made if there is any hazard or danger to the workers or the surrounding environment.

Along with looking after the workers the materials used in the clothing is closely monitored. Only environment friendly products and materials will be used in the making of the clothing so there is as little damage as possible on the environment.

Gogo boots have gained a slightly filthy reputation in recent years, due to their association with strippers and the sex industry, but this reputation is totally undeserved. The Ugg Boot Trademark Dispute

Ugg Boots are now known all over the world for their ability to keep the feet of the wearer warm even in very cold climates. For this specific reason, Ugg Boots can be worn even without socks and this has made the shoes immensely popular all over the world. It isn't certain whether they were first made in Australia or New Zealand and much water has flown under the bridge since then. The Ugg Boot trademark controversy has also seen a revival in the past few years as well.

History of Ugg Boots

Historically they were worn by pilots, surfers and shearer's way back in the 1920's in Australia. Then in the 1970's, they became favorites of surfers and swimmers who wore them after competitions to keep their feet warm. Since the they are made of sheepskin, they help to keep the temperature warm and keep the feet insulated.

Though the boots were earlier made in such a way that both men and women could wear them, lately specific trends have been incorporated for women's Ugg Boots as well. Soon these boots acquired cult status and became quite a fashion trend in the 2000's. Many celebrities have also started endorsing these shoes and this is the reason that they have become quite popular.

Both New Zealand and Australia claim that they were the first ones to manufacture the boots. However it is clear that the production of the boots started in 1933 by the 'Blue Mountains Ugg Boots" company. However these boots (then known as flying Ugg Boots or Fug Boots) were being used by aviators way back in the 1920's when the cockpits of the airplanes weren't pressurized and they required the boots to ensure that their feet stayed warm. Even rural shearers and farm hands were using the shoes in the 1920's.

Actually the term Ugg Boot is really a broad and non-specific term that has been used for sheepskin shoes whether they have been manufactured in Australia or New Zealand. It can be said that it is really a generic term.

Sales beyond Australia

In the 1970's the trademark dispute was extremely widespread when an Australian surfer named Shane Steadman started selling these boots and shoes and then registered them as a trademark. In 1979, another Australian surfer known as Brian Smith actually bought these shoes to United States for selling and registered his company as Ugg Holdings Inc. and bought the trademark from Steadman.

Now the trademark has been registered in 25 countries. However Smith sold his holdings to Decker Outdoor Corporation. Since the trademark was registered in 25 countries, Decker sent cease and desist letters to all the Australian manufacturers from using the name Ugg Boots. But the issue wasn't pressed further.

The Trademark Row Resolved

Suddenly in 2000, as a result of celebrity endorsements, the demand for the shoes soared incredibly and Australian manufacturers started selling under the name Ugg Boots. As per a court ruling now, 'Ugg Boots' is a generic term that can be used by manufacturers that use sheepskin to make boots. However in other countries, manufacturers can't use this term with reference to the boots made of sheepskin.

Let's Talk About How Cufflinks Invaded the Fashion Industry

During the 1960s, the British invasion took place in America. It was not a colonizing act but there was an influx of British pop bands in the USA. This event gave rise to new music trends and dress styles that flooded not only the Americans but everyone across the Atlantic. It was actually the first time that England was able to produce a sound that was uniquely British and original.

It was more than just an awakening. It was what most people call a "holistic conversion" of what the Americans forced upon the population of the music lovers all over the world. The Beatles music was introduced complete with its own hair style, clothing and language. There were other bands that were introduced as well. They were naturally introduced and they became memorable in their own right.

During this era, there was a huge diversity of sounds from the Hollies, Eric Burden and the Animals, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Tom Jones, the Troggs, Moody Blues and a whole lot more. Each was easily recognized with their own "sound."

America was not able to resist the British invasion. They could do nothing about and instead of fighting it off, they simply capitalized on their style and mass produced everything that the British introduced. Eventually, record companies realized that a band with the right sound and individual personalities (even without that much talent), if marketed effectively, could turn huge profits.

Other than the music scene, the British invasion also infiltrated other aspects of American life: a diverse group of designers were already branding a different range of cufflinks that were all distinct from each other. This huge wave of British influenced cufflinks started two decades after the death of the American cufflinks designer, Swank, that produced twelve million pairs of cufflinks annually and they peaked during the latter part of the 1960s.

On the other hand, the English flavour was focusing more on mass production and they produce funky, flamboyant and loudly designed cufflinks which was in perfect contrast to other cufflinks being produced by other designers. And people who have kept abreast with the development of cufflinks would surely know the difference between the Brit designed cufflinks and those that are not.

Dandy styles were reinvented and produced by Beau Brummell. He, George Bryan Brummel, was the arbiter of men's fashion in England and he was a very close friend of the Prince Regent. He was the one who introduced men who wore understated, but nicely fitted, tailored dark suits and full-length trousers with an elaborately-knotted cravat to finish the entire look.

To this day, Beau Brummell is always remembered for his modern man's suit with necktie. He was the one who introduced and established it as a formal man's wardrobe. His original style was often referred as dandyism although Brummell, surely, would not have agreed to the description.

As for cufflinks, no one really knows when men started wearing cufflinks in the United States. However, what was clear was that it was often worn by high-class men and they were accessories reserved exclusively for the wealthy classes.

Ugg Boots are a traditional form of footwear that originated in the Southern Hemisphere in Australia. They are created by using sheep skin for the outer of the boot and using sheeps wool for the inner lining to create a highly comfortable boot. They were particularly popular amongst farmers within the region as they helped to shield their feet from the harsh winters.

During the 1960's the boots began to become popular amongst surfers who would pull them on after exiting the ocean to help keep their feet free from the irritation of sand. One such surfer was Brian Walker who was also something of an entrepreneur and decided to finance a surfing trip to the west coast of the United States of America by taking a pallet of Ugg Boots with him to sell to locals when he arrived. The boots sold well, so well in fact that in 1979 he set up a company Ugg Holdings Incorporated to distribute the boots across the states.

During the early part of the twenty first century the boots started to develop a cult following amongst celebrities in Hollywood causing the popularity of the boots to soar. Seeing this success the large Australian company Decker decided to buy the company and one of their first actions was to trademark the name Ugg Boots.

Decker ramped up their distribution network to expand it into Asia and Europe, with their products being particularly popular within the United Kingdom. Today they have expanded their output to make boots for women, men and children.

They're Back - The Return of the Wide Leg Pants

Since I wasn't born until 1981 I missed out on the 60's and 70's fashion revolution. Clothes went from the groovy man, love peace and soul look to the punk rock, grunge and cross colors look. So I missed the whole bell bottom era. However I have been around to see different fashions repeat itself. Some of my favorites that I think are timeless pieces are blue jean jackets, mini skirts, and any type of blazers. These are fashions to keep in your closet for sure.

The latest trend, bell bottoms that I mentioned, are a fabulous repeat of time. In 2010 they aren't actually called bell bottoms any longer. Their called wide-leg or flare pants now. Someone decided to give them a more modern name I guess. Although I know all fashions are not for every fabulous girl, you could pull it off with the right style know-how.

If you are thinking about rocking a pair let me give you a few tips.

1. Always wear a fitted top or a blouse you can tuck in. Don't put on a top that makes your upper half look bulky. Ultimately that will make you appear heavy.

2. If you can add a belt to balance your look out that would be great. You don't want to look like your top is running into your bottom. Break it up.

3. Finally put on some pumps. Heels with wide-leg pants give the illusion of longer legs. Everyone wants to have legs like the trees in Babylon so don't make a stumpkin out of your self.

An Overview of Fashion in the 1970's

Fashions in the 1970's were far more relaxed than those in the 1960's before, many emerging design showed signs of nostalgia with designers taking influence from previous decades. Laura Ashley was noted as being heavily influenced by Edwardian style dresses and prints. Barbara Hulanicki's Biba label produced a 20's/30's influenced look with long cotton skirts, long sleeved shirts or smock and a floppy brimmed hat. The use of 30's inspired colourings, the two tone black and cream or brown and cream, could be seen in shoes and 'office work wear' styles.

By looking back the fashion designers were still continuing the new fashion trends for the new ideas, ideologies and social freedoms that were sought for both men and women.

Distinct fashion styles for certain youth groups became apparent again through this decade in the attempt of identification of the differing subcultures. Several mainstream trends came and went such as the glam fashion (David Bowie inspired) and disco fashion. (John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever 1977). The hippie/ethnic fashion trends of flared jeans, tie die shirts, peasant blouses, hair-bands and sandals continued from the sixties. More influence from other cultures became incorporated as social awareness of social and environmental issues increased.

In the early seventies the short skirts and 'hot pants' launched by Mary Quant in the 60's were still very popular, dresses however were available for all in three established lengths, the mini (as the mini skirt), the midi (calf length) and the maxi (ankles). Long flowing 'boho' skirts and the inspired hippie styles were very popular.

Footwear started to become more exotic with the platform shoes that appeared in the early seventies, their huge soles of several inches thickness for mainly women and some men! Health warnings accompanied this fashion about potential damage to your back, although you do not hear many people saying they injured their back in the 70's wearing platform shoes!

Men's clothing continued on the brighter flamboyant note from the previous decade. Flared denim jeans, once a symbol of manual work and now a fashion statement, along with a cheesecloth shirt is perhaps the most common image associated with men from the 70's. However the glitter, heels, bright colours and disco-wear was available for all genders as the trends passed through.

Lapels on all shirts and jackets grew in size and the kipper tie appeared to be necessary for the smarter male outfit. Longer hair and beards were considered very fashionable for men, the hippie and psychedelic influences were still in the fashion statements although the pop music had started to move on.

By the end of the seventies it was socially acceptable for most people to wear jeans and mostly flared jeans at that. Printed T-shirts became very popular in this decade along with trainers and canvas shoes. The inspiration and ideals behind the hippie styles from the late 60's were not as apparent in society but the fashions stayed.

Then Punk Fashion emerged onto the scene with the original Punk band, The Sex Pistols. The legendary Vivien Westwood was the partner of The Sex Pistols' promoter, Malcolm McLaren, and is credited with creating the original Punk look.

This look was based around black leather, ripped denim and slogans on T-shirts intended to provoke and insult people who thought along what was considered mainstream ideals. The punk message was 'destroy'. This destruction was of anything considered as mainstream good taste. Spiked hair dyed bright colours and second hand clothes ripped to shreds to demonstrate a rejection of the accepted fashions and ideals. The punk trend continued well into the 1980's.
